breast cancerThis month’s do-good tip is going pink in recognition of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to increase awareness, raise funds for research, and work toward prevention and cure. Below you’ll find a collection of tips and strategies to get involved with this amazing movement. Oh, and men…. we need your help too! Do it for your sister, your mother, your aunt, your daughter, or your wife.

Army of Women

The Love/Avon Army of Women offers a revolutionary new opportunity for YOU to partner with research scientists to move us beyond a cure…and it is one of the absolute easiest ways to get involved with this cause. Their goal is to recruit one million healthy women of every age and ethnicity (including breast cancer survivors and women at high-risk for the disease) to partner with breast cancer researchers and participate in the research that will eradicate breast cancer once and for all.

How it works: Women (and men) who are interested can register on the Love/Avon Army of Women website, and provide very basic information such as name, age, city and state of residence. Army of Women members receive email updates from the Love/Avon Army of Women announcing new research studies looking for volunteers. If you fit the criteria for one of these studies and want to participate, all you need to do is reply to the email and let them know you’ve accepted the “Call to Action.” To learn more or to sign up, visit them online or watch Dr. Susan Love on Good Morning America as she talks about the cause.

Support Susan G. Komen for the Cure

As the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is working to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Here’s how you can help:

Donate or Raise Money: Because 10 million women around the world could die from breast cancer in the next 25 years, we need to fight every minute of every day to save every life. By making a donation or raising money, you can help save lives. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, you can also organize your own special events to raise money. Consider throwing a pink-themed party or an office “pink day” (when employees can wear blue jeans with pink clothing or accessories in exchange for a donation).

Race for a Cure: As one of the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world, the Komen Race for the Cure raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer. With events across the country, the Race for the Cure celebrates breast cancer survivorship, and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease. Not only is it a good opportunity to give back, it’s also a fun way to get moving with the family.

Become an Advocate: Join the foundation in telling congress to support key cancer care policy reforms that are most important.

Participate in an Event: Whether you are a golfer, a bowler, a chef or a runner, you can contribute to the fight against breast cancer 365 days a year.

Shop Pink

You’ll likely see many opportunities to shop pink this month. But, just in case, here are a few sites that devote a portion of their proceeds to breast cancer organizations. “Oh, The Places You’ll Go” End of School-Year Tradition

It’s not too much longer till the school year comes to a close, so I wanted to share this amazing idea I found on…you guessed it…Pinterest. You all know the book Oh, The Places You’ll Go from Dr. Seuss. It’s a great graduation gift. But, Lisa from Lisa’s Workshop suggests grabbing a copy when your kid is young. At the end of each school year, give it to your child’s teacher to sign or write a note. When you’re child graduates (hard to think of!), you’ll have a lovely gift to give him/her. Lisa has even included some lovely tags in her blog post, so make sure to go check it out.
