Located at the intersections of Illinois and Washington Streets, the Rhythm! Discovery Center is one of my favorite places to take the kids. Each room is filled with an assortment of percussion instruments and artifacts from a range of time periods and places around the world. One could spend hours learning about all the exhibits, and the role rhythm has played in society. But, to be honest, we just like to play. It’s a great opportunity to introduce music and one of the few places that engages both my 4-year-old and my 1-year-old.

Each time we go, we’re captured by a new set of instruments we didn’t play with the time before. But, invariably we always make our way to the two sound-proofed rooms where my oldest likes to jam out on the drums and harmonize with the glockenspiel. Next door, my youngest finds amusement with all the hand-held instruments ranging from rattles and maracas to cow bells, cabasas and a slew of other instruments I never knew existed.

Admission to this local gem is only $8 a person and children under 5 are free. Plus, family memberships are only $50. So, it’s definitely a place you can go to again and again, especially if you’d like to view one of their many live performances or presentations. The Rhythm! Discovery Center is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5:00 p.m. Below is a list of upcoming events to check out:

February 11 (11am & 1pm) – “Dancing Drum” presents an educational experience focusing on drum circles, character building and rhythms/dancing from other cultures.

February 18 (1pm) – “Percussion Arts Society, from the Archive” will present interesting percussion instruments from the Rhythm! Discovery Center archives.

Of course, my kids went straight for the trains and my oldest began constructing the tracks almost immediately. This section of the museum provided children with an opportunity to explore their creativity by building and constructing. Just next to what I call the “engineer area” was the art center. I really tried to entice my son to work on a craft because I was so impressed with this part of the museum. They had bins with every type of medium you could possibly imagine. The possibilities for creations were endless.

The other areas of the museum were just as exciting. My husband any 1-year-old loved the Kids on the Move center on the 4th floor, but my 4-year-old and I spent the most time on the second floor in the ExploraHouse (the home of the gigantic toilet). I know, it sounds kind of strange to climb into a gigantic toilet, but sliding down allows kids to learn how plumbing works in our homes. The bubble room was equally fun. I was able to put my son’s head inside a bubble and we were even able to stand inside a giant bubble.

With a general admission price of $6, it’s definitely something to check out and a great way to beat winter–or even summer–time boredom! Discount admission coupons are available online or in person at The Columbus Area Visitors Center. You can also save by purchasing a 10-visit pass for $40, or invest in a family membership for $99. KidsCommons is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. They are closed on Mondays and holidays including: New Year’s Day, Easter, July 4, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. They will also be closed Feb. 10-12 for their annual Carnivale benefit.

While you’re there, don’t forget about lunch. By the time we were done playing, we had worked up a pretty good appetite. Luckily there were a few great options within walking distance. Scotty’s Burger Joint is located across the street and they offer free kids meals on Sundays and Tuesdays. (You get one free kids meal per adult meal purchased.) Catty corner from KidsCommons is Puccinis’s, where they serve up the most delicious calzones! But, we decided to walk a few doors down to Zaharakos Ice Cream Parlor, a historic landmark built in 1900. With the stained glass, rich oak and polished marble, this place can’t be missed. We thoroughly enjoyed our root beers straight from the old fashioned soda fountain and couldn’t resist following our meal with a delicious ice cream sundae. (However, I seriously considered the Dr. Pepper milkshake, a favorite of mine since visiting the Dr. Pepper Museum in Waco, Texas.)

This has been such a fun summer for me. When I attended the Indiana Tourism Expo a few months ago, I had no idea what I was in store for. I didn’t even think I should go. I’m so glad that I did! Not being a native Hoosier, I had no idea how much the state has to offer.

I’ve been reading about Fair Oaks on all the Indiana blogs this summer and I can’t wait to take my kids! As their website says, the Fair Oaks Dairy Adventure is a fun-filled, up-close look at sustainable dairy farming at its finest…an experience the whole family will enjoy. The Dairy Adventure includes a collection of educational exhibits for the whole family to enjoy, a one-of-a-kind 4D movie experience, their Birthing Barn, and of course, a tour of one of the largest working dairies in the country. While you’re there, you can stop in the ice cream parlor, gift shop and café, which overlook their cheese-making and milk-bottling facilities. The Albanese Candy Factory

You know how much I love The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. It’s my favorite destination to take my kids and I recommend it to anybody who is within a driving distance. I’ve even considered going without my kids so that I could enjoy some of the exhibits they’re not particularly interested in (but I’m afraid people might look at me funny if I’m there without kids).

In my Indiana Tour, I’ve been invited to attend the 12th annual Vintage Indiana Wine & Food Festival on June 4 in downtown Indianapolis. I can’t wait! Vintage Indiana is the premier venue for getting to know Indiana wines, which is definitely on my agenda for this summer! I’ll have the opportunity to sample more than 200 wines, learn about pairing, listen to live music and dine on delicious food from some of Indiana’s top culinary experts. Plus there will be opportunities to purchase a bottle of my new-found favorites. Of course, there’s also a kid-zone full of carnival-like activities for the little ones. But, I think I’ll leave mine at home with the sitter and enjoy a nice day out with hubby. It’s nice to know they’re welcome to join us, though!

You can come too. Advance tickets can be purchased at local Marsh stores for $22, or you can purchase tickets at the gate for $25. Ticket price includes admission, free samples and a logoed souvenir wine glass (for the first 10,000 people).
